During August Recess, Advocate for Stronger Child Nutrition Programs

Congress is going home for its six week recess, giving advocates a unique opportunity to directly interact with Members. Below are tools that provide you with step-by-step actions you can take to lift up child nutrition programs this summer in anticipation of the child nutrition reauthorization effort in the fall.

Click to Tweet: #HouseofRepresentatives & #Senate: strengthen #summermeals by cosponsoring S. 1941/H.R. 3378 and S. 1908/H.R. 2818, which improve access and reduce summer hunger. Go to @fractweets http://bit.ly/2XvrXWp #ChildNutritionReauthorization #CNR2019

Happening on the Hill

The House leaves for recess on July 26; the Senate on August 2. Both chambers have been advancing the Child Nutrition Reauthorization (CNR) process. Several CNR “marker” (programmatic or aspirational) bills have been introduced recently that address improving access to nutrition during the summer months, school meal debt, and lunch shaming. More bills will be coming soon!

Host a Summer Meals
Roundtable

Over the recess, invite Members of Congress to a site visit followed by a stakeholder roundtable discussion. This will allow Members to see the programs in action while also engaging with a diverse group of stakeholders in the district.

Urge Members to Cosponsor Priority CNR Bills

Reconnect and urge your Members to cosponsor key child nutrition bills—cosponsors needed! Be sure your organization endorses these bills. Congress must hear a loud and clear message that these are the anti-hunger community's CNR priorities.

Catch Members at
Local Events

Members will be at fairs, town halls, and other events during the recess. Thank supportive Members; ask others to cosponsor bills and speak out to strengthen child nutrition programs during CNR. Tag FRAC in your recess social media!
