Call your Members: Keep Pressure on Farm Bill Conferees

Join National SNAP Call-In Day Thursday, Sept. 13, Twitter chat on Friday, Sept. 14

On Thursday, September 13, join advocates across the country in calling Members of Congress (Capitol Switchboard - (202) 224-3121) to protect and strengthen the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in the Farm Bill Conference. Urge your Members to adopt the Senate Farm Bill SNAP provisions and reject any cuts or efforts to weaken the program – especially the draconian provisions contained in the House Farm Bill.

On Friday, September 14, 2018 at 1 p.m. Eastern, FRAC will join MomsRising and other national partners for a #FoodFri Twitter chat on SNAP and the Farm Bill. Get vocal on social about the threats posed by the House version of the Farm Bill, and why protecting and strengthening SNAP should be a priority for the Farm Bill conferees, by following the #FoodFri hashtag.

Happening Now
On September 5, Farm Bill (H.R. 2) conferees held their first formal meeting to iron out differences in Senate and House versions of the bill. The Senate version of H.R. 2 largely maintains current SNAP law; the House version proposes to drastically cut SNAP benefits by approximately $20 billion over ten years. With limited time remaining before the September 30 deadline, it is uncertain whether the conferees will come to an agreement on how to reconcile the differences in their bills or if the bill will be extended. As a reminder, SNAP is a mandatory program and will continue without the passage of a bill by the deadline.

What to Say
Urge Members of Congress to protect and strengthen SNAP during Farm Bill Conference deliberations and speak out in support of SNAP and the Senate Farm Bill SNAP provisions. Tell them to make sure the Farm Bill keeps food on the table for people struggling against hunger.

What to Share
Check out FRAC’s toolkit for interactive mapping resources and state factsheets to highlight SNAP participation rates by state, county, and congressional district, and to demonstrate that low-income people in rural areas will be hardest hit by cuts to SNAP.

Write an LTE
We strongly encourage you to customize this sample letter to the editor on the Farm Bill and send it to your local newspaper. For maximum effect, include the names of your Members of Congress, state and Congressional District SNAP data, and a personal story about SNAP.
