USDA’s recently released analysis of the proposed rule, Categorical Eligibility in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, found that free school meals would be jeopardized for nearly 1 million children. This impact is in addition to the already reported 3.1 million people who would lose SNAP benefits. USDA reopened the comment period for 14 days to allow for comments in response to the new school meals data. Comments in response to this new data can and should be submitted even if organizations or individuals submitted broader comments during the original comment period that ended on September 23.
