Congressional Briefing: Meet the Nutritional Needs of Students Through Community Eligibility (June 17, 11 a.m. Eastern)
As states and school districts make plans to safely reopen schools in the fall, school meals are an important part of the conversation. The economic impact of COVID-19 makes it more important than ever to ensure children have access to school breakfast and lunch. Community eligibility currently allows over 30,000 high-poverty schools to offer breakfast and lunch at no charge to all students, but as millions of households lose jobs and wages, many more schools are becoming eligible to implement community eligibility, and will find it to be a more financially viable option than before the pandemic.
Join this virtual briefing to learn more about community eligibility. Panelists will discuss how it works, when are the upcoming deadlines, and what are some resources to help spread the word and support school districts in your congressional district or state as they determine whether or not community eligibility is a financially viable option for the 2020–2021 school year.
The event is co-hosted by the Food Research & Action Center; AASA, The School Superintendents Association; American Federation of Teachers; Center on Budget and Policy Priorities; and the National Education Association
