Endorse “Anti-Lunch Shaming Act of 2019”

The “Anti-Lunch Shaming Act of 2019” (S. 1119/H.R. 2311) would do the following:

prohibit schools from taking action that stigmatizes or shames students who cannot pay their school meals fees;
require that all communication related to unpaid school meals fees be directed to the child's parent or guardian; and
encourage schools to adopt best practices that ensure eligible students have access to free and reduced-price school meals and increase efforts to reduce unpaid school meals fees.

By enacting these provisions in the upcoming Child Nutrition Reauthorization, Congress can ensure that the school cafeteria is a positive and supportive environment for all students, more students eligible for free and reduced-price school meals will be certified to receive them, and schools are encouraged to adopt practices that will reduce unpaid school meals fees.

Senator Tom Udall (D-NM) and Representative Debra Haaland (D-NM) introduced the bill on April 10, 2019.
